Pickleball, try the game taking The Bluffs at Huron by storm

“Pickleball. We never heard of it, let alone played it, until we bought a home in The Bluffs. Suddenly, we had access to this amazing Clubhouse and all these new friends. So many of them already played pickleball and insisted we try it, so why not? It took a game or two to get the hang of it, but now we’re officially picklers, through and through!” – Andrea and Scott, Bluffs homeowners and residents

Meet Andrea and Scott, married sixty-somethings and homeowners at The Bluffs at Huron. After lengthy careers, these happy homeowners sold their used, legacy home in Kitchener and bought a beautiful, ALL-NEW bungalow in The Bluffs. Thanks to the Parkbridge land lease approach, they now use the equity left over from the sale of their home to retire in comfort, including travelling into the States every winter to RV with their friends.

Once we moved in, we got what we expected: a beautiful new home in a charming community with plenty of equity left over to retire. But what we didn’t expect is to make so many friends. The other homeowners here embraced us, inviting us to clubs and events, including trying out the indoor pickleball court in the Clubhouse. How could we say no?

What’s pickleball?

You play this racket sport a court measuring 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, about a quarter of the size of a tennis court. Singles or doubles take turns batting the ball over the net. If the receiving side misses the serving side volley, the serving side receives a point. You play for 11 points, but a team must win by two points.

Pickleball is growing fast across Canada. The Canadian Pickleball Association recently celebrated reaching 70,000 members!

Pickleball requires a court, at least one fellow player, and some equipment. The paddle: a larger iteration of a ping pong paddle. The ball: a lot like a whiffle. The rules, uncomplicated: players strike the ball over the net within the lines, akin to tennis. The most appealing aspect? Pickleball accommodates individuals of all ages and skill levels, making it a genuinely inclusive and enjoyable game.

Honestly, we’re not exactly athletes. But pickleball is just so fast-paced and fun to play that you don’t even realize you’re getting a nice workout. It’s a lot easier on the body than tennis, for example, so you can play every day if you want to. We just love the excitement and fun of playing with people.

Pickleball is good for you! The Montreal Gazette reports on studies showing the many health benefits of playing.

Pickleball at The Bluffs

Parkbridge designed an indoor court in the Clubhouse, enabling year-around play. To keep up with the community’s growing passion for pickleball, Parkbridge has new outdoor courts coming to The Bluffs in early 2025 (along with a new off-leash dog park!) exclusively for Bluffs’ homeowners to enjoy with each other and their visitors.

Pickleball is easy to learn, easy to play and the most fun you can have on a court. My husband and I started playing about three years ago. It’s literally changed our lives! We play every single day.

How to join the fun

As a resident of The Bluffs at Huron, you can simply join in the fun by signing up at the Clubhouse. You can join the league and play until your hearts content—just take part in events and friendly tournaments—or just watch the action from the court of the galley.
